**HPE 10504 IRF HEARTBEAT ERROR** **Problem:** I have created IRF on two brand new HPE 10504 and 5900AF switches and the two switches formed IRF fabric. But its showing heartbeat timed out error. The IRF port go down and after few seconds it comes back up. It keeps on going on in cycles every 30 seconds. Below are the IRF error messages displaying on the console. %Feb 8 21:26:23:963 2020 HPE STM/2/STM_LINK_TIMEOUT: -MDC=1; IRF port 2 went down because the heartbeat timed out. %Feb 8 21:26:23:979 2020 HPE STM/3/STM_LINK_DOWN: -MDC=1; IRF port 2 went down. %Feb 8 21:26:24:098 2020 HPE STM/2/STM_LINK_TIMEOUT: -MDC=1-Chassis=2-Slot=0; IRF port 1 went down because the heartbeat timed out. %Feb 8 21:26:24:153 2020 HPE STM/3/STM_LINK_DOWN: -MDC=1-Chassis=2-Slot=0; IRF port 1 went down. %Feb 8 21:26:27:400 2020 HPE IFNET/3/PHY_UPDOWN: -MDC=1; Physical state on the interface Ten- GigabitEthernet2/2/0/45 changed to down. %Feb 8 21:26:27:401 2020 HPE IFNET/5/LINK_UPDOWN: -MDC=1; Line protocol state on the interface Ten- GigabitEthernet2/2/0/45 changed to down. **Solution:** Execute the **irf-port-configuration active** CLI command to activate IRF Ports. **Additionally, confirm that the units have the same name (system name), software version and a correct distribution of the IRF ports.** Example: **Unit1:** HPE Comware Software, Version 7.1.045, Release 2432P10 Copyright (c) 2010-2020 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Development LP HPE 5900AF-48XG-4QSFP+ Switch uptime is 0 weeks, 0 days, 1 hour, 2 minutes Last reboot reason : USER reboot Boot image: flash:/5900_5920-cmw710-boot-r2432p10.bin Boot image version: 7.1.045, Release 2432P10 Compiled Jun 05 2020 16:00:00 System image: flash:/5900_5920-cmw710-system-r2432p10.bin System image version: 7.1.045, Release 2432P10 Compiled Jun 05 2020 16:00:00 **sysname: [HPE]** **IRF PORT:** irf-port 1/2 port group interface FortyGigE1/0/49 port group interface FortyGigE1/0/50 **Unit 2:** HPE Comware Software, Version 7.1.045, Release 2432P10 Copyright (c) 2010-2020 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Development LP HPE 5900AF-48XG-4QSFP+ Switch uptime is 0 weeks, 0 days, 1 hour, 2 minutes Last reboot reason : USER reboot Boot image: flash:/5900_5920-cmw710-boot-r2432p10.bin Boot image version: 7.1.045, Release 2432P10 Compiled Jun 05 2020 16:00:00 System image: flash:/5900_5920-cmw710-system-r2432p10.bin System image version: 7.1.045, Release 2432P10 Compiled Jun 05 2020 16:00:00 **sysname: [HPE]** **IRF PORT:** irf-port 2/1 port group interface FortyGigE2/0/49 port group interface FortyGigE2/0/50 Your one is a IRF Ring Topology where IRF Port 1 on IRF Member 1 is connected to IRF Port 2 on IRF Member 2 and IRF Port 1 on IRF Member 2 is connected back to IRF Port 2 on IRF Member 1...thus forming a Ring (1-2-1) instead of the classical Chain (1-2) usually found on a two-only members IRF setup. ---- **Upgrade firmware 5900AF switch** **TFTP download from a server** tftp 10.10.110.1 get newest.ipe **Upgrading the software images** boot-loader file flash:/newest.ipe slot 1 main boot-loader file flash:/newest.ipe slot 2 main system-view [Sysname] irf auto-update enable save reboot [Sysname] quit **Installing a patch package** install activate patch flash:/system-patch.bin slot 1 install activate patch flash:/system-patch.bin slot 2 display install active Active packages on slot 1: flash:/boot.bin flash:/system.bin flash:/system-patch.bin Active packages on slot 2: flash:/boot.bin flash:/system.bin flash:/system-patch.bin For more information see the following file: {{ :hpe:switch:5900:hpe_a00119927en_us_5900_5920_7.10.r2432p10_consolidated_release_notes.pdf |}} Other files: {{ :hpe:switch:5900:comware_v7_5900_5920_5930_switch_mib_companion.pdf |}} {{ :hpe:switch:5900:hpe_5900_5920-cmw710-r2432p10_usage_guidelines.pdf |}} {{ :hpe:switch:5900:hpe_comware_7_netconf_xml_api_reference.pdf |}} **HPE Comware Software, Version 7.1.045, Release 2432P10** {{ :hpe:switch:5900:5900_5920_7.10.r2432p10.zip |}} [[https://h10145.www1.hpe.com/Downloads/DownloadSoftware.aspx?SoftwareReleaseUId=30534&ProductNumber=JH037A&lang=en&cc=us&prodSeriesId=1008652960&SaidNumber=|For new software versions visit the following website:]] ----
