GETTING IP ADDRESSES TO SUPPORTED DEVICES

Symptoms:

• How to configure IP address on devices supported in remote operations
  * IP address not being accepted from DHCP Server
  * Device not accepting DHCP-offered IP addresses
  * Traces indicate the phone is releasing the IP address after receving first reply from DHCP Server
  * No IP address on device
  * Phone not booting up
  * Remote ATA not working

  * Remote Phone not working
  

Facts:

Causes: The phone is looking for the NCP's IP address in the first reply from the DHCP server. Without this parameter it does not accept an IP address from the DHCP server. This is accomplished by configuring Option 184 on the DHCP Server for those network scopes that have NBX phones using that server to get their IP addresses

Fixes: There are three potential fixes for this problem:

• Configure Option 184 on DHCP Server . This is the preferred method, because any IP addressing changes can be performed from one location for all phones using DHCP. For example, if the IP address of the NCP changes then you only have to change it on the server and NOT on all of the IP phones but the phones would have to rebooted to get the new information.
• Manually configure the NCP's IP address on the NBX device. At this point the phone accepts the offered IP address from the DHCP Server. Keep in mind that if the IP address of the NCP changes, then you must manually reconfigure all of the remote devices. For the ATA, ATC, ALC and Adjuncts, they have to be discovered locally to learne the NCP information so if the NCP IP changes then all of these remote devices would have to be brought back locally to the NCP and booted up.
• Manually configure all of the IP parameters on the NBX devices. Following this method means that any changes done in the IP addressing scheme of any of the devices subnet(s) means manually reconfiguring all of the affected devices.

You can manually define the IP address of the phones by using the LUI or have the phone discovered locally to the NCP and using the IP configuration screen for each phone to be done. To manually configure the IP information on the other remote supported devices, they would have to be configured locally so it would involve bring them back to the site where the NCP is located.
