Remote IP phones: Paging, Lamps, Conference, Date/Time issues

Symptoms: Remote IP phone - resolving various issues

Facts: NBX 100

Causes: Most vendor switches have IGMP enabled by default which means that any Multicast traffic will not be forwarded unless there is a request for that particular Multicast address. WAN routers not properly configured for IGMP and Multicast Routing Protocol

Fixes:

- IGMP protocol must be enabled throughout the entire connection and over WAN links, routers, and switches for proper operation of:

- NBX Telephones do not make client join requests for multicasts

- The routers/switches must be set to do Multicast Routing such as DVMRP, PIM Dense Mode (Cisco), or MOSPF.

The routers must initiate an IGMP Query, which NBX devices will respond to, and the router will flood all ports for which it receives a reply with the multicast traffic the NBX sends for Conferencing, Paging, BLF lights, and phone display date and time updates.

NBX phones will reply to Queries, but will NOT initiate join requests. Therefore, it is up to the switch or router settings to propagate the multicast or initiate a query to the remote IP phones. See your router or switch manual for particular setup, but IGMP ver. 2 must be supported on all devices from NCP to each remote IP phone used for the above named features to function, along with Multicast Routing Protocol to query the remote NBX telephones.
