MESH AP using an external antenna

Symptoms: MESH AP using an external antenna / Can I use an External Antenna with the AP3850 defined as Mesh AP / Cannot enter the External Antenna setting in the AP Boot-Configuration.

Facts: Wireless controller

  • Wireless LAN Controller WX4400
  • Wireless LAN Controller WX2200
  • Wireless LAN Switch WXR100
  • Wireless Switch Manager
  • Wireless LAN Managed Access Point 3850

Fixes: In order to define a MESH AP to use an external antenna in order to establish the initial MESH link, follow the steps below (via WXM or CLI):

1) Define the MESH AP Access Point (AP3850)

2) Define for this Access Point the Antenna Location (Indoor or Outdoor)

3) Define for this Access Point the Antenna Type (Internal or ANT3C591)

4) Deploy those changes

Note: Once this is done, you will need to make sure the AP3850 is in OPERATIONAL state, it is critical that you define the Antenna for this specific AP before defining the AP BOOT CONFIGURATION.

5) Define the AP with MESH enabled, the WPA2 PSK key , the MESH ESSID defined on the MESH Portal

6) Deploy those changes

Note: The Boot Configuration parameters will be written in memory of the AP3850 along with the Antenna settings which explains why the order in which the configuration is done is so critical. The Antenna setting will not appear in the display boot-configuration command but only in the display configuration of the WX switch but will still reside in the AP3850 memory.
