Symptoms:

• Getting IP Phones to use the LUI (LCD User Interface) IP information
• Having IP devices use the preset IP information and not DHCP
  • Devices not using the preset IP Information

• Remote IP Phones are not working, but the LUI IP information is correct

Causes: When using NBX phones powered by an EPS on a LAN with a DHCP server that you do not want to use (maybe because it is configured to utilize a WAN link that does not support voice) the DHCP settings will tend to override the settings configured via LUI or via NetSet. Typically a user would connect the phone to the LAN, the phone would power up, the user would configure the settings in LUI, and then reboot the phone. However, during the configuration process in LUI, the phone is continuing it's discovery process in the background; it doesn't stop while configuring in LUI. The likely result is that by the time the user has completed configuring, the phone is finished trying to connect to the NCP using its own settings, and then does a DHCP request. DHCP then overrides the settings–not the intended result.

Fixes: Use the following procedure to use the LUI IP information on an NBX Phone:

1. Power the phone without LAN connection.
2. Configure the IP settings using LUI. See NBX - Using the LCD User Interface (LUI) utility on NBX telephones solution for information on LUI.
3. Remove power from the phone.
4. Connect the LAN connection to the NBX telephone.
5. Apply power to the NBX telephone. Note: If connecting the phones to an EPS, use the individual LAN and power connectors on the adapter at the back of the phone set per the above. Do not use the single wall connection to accomplish the above procedure.

Important Note: All (remote/IP) NBX devices follow this same boot sequence. Therefore, with Analog Line Cards (as an example) in a remote chassis, make sure there is network connectivity from the card (device) all the way to the NCP prior to connecting the power to the chassis (device). If you do not, it is likely that DHCP will override the settings configured previously via NetSet, requiring a trip back to the sub-net supporting the NCP to reconfigure the device via NetSet.
